About theFairfield Region |
This region includes the cities of Fairfield, Vacaville and their surrounding areas. It is the area nestled "in-between" the San Francisco Bay Area and the Greater Sacramento Area.
Although historically an agriculturally dominated economy, this region now hosts Travis Air force Base and large private employers including the headquarters of Jelly Belly Factory, an Anheuser-Busch Budweiser Brewery, Clorox, Genentech, ALZA and Kaiser Permanente.
Major attractions include a host of local wineries, the Grizzly Island Wildlife Area and the famous Nut Tree commercial area just off Interstate 80.
The Spanish Army first entered this region in 1810 on a mission to collect runaway Mission Indians. The indigenous Suisunes were a tribe of the Patwin Native American peoples. The Suisunes resisted until the Mexican Army eventually defeated them in 1835. The entire area became part of the United States following the Mexican-American War.
