About the San Bernardino-Riverside Region
Also popularly known as the Inland Empire, the San Bernardino-Riverside Region extends inland just east of Los Angeles and Orange Counties.
The area has experienced rapid growth since the 1970's as people and businesses have sought to escape the high cost of real estate in the Los Angeles area. Once an agricultural based economy, this area has become heavily urbanized, although some agriculture operations continue.
As an intersection of railroad facilities and Interstate Highways, the area has developed into a strong shipping hub, with an ever increasing warehouse, logistics and retail presence. Amazon, Toyota, Whirlpool, Kohls, Mattel are among the many companies that have substantial business operations in the area.
Ontario Airport serves the area as well as the higher educational institutions of University of California Riverside and California State University San Bernardino, among others.
Original inhabitants were of the Tongva, Serrano and Cahuilla tribes of American Indian peoples. The area remained sparsely populated by Europeans during the Spanish and Mexican eras. American immigration began in earnest following the Mexican-American War.
