About the San Francisco Peninsula Region
The San Francisco Peninsula Area is anchored around San Mateo County including cites from South San Francisco in the north to Menlo Park in the south. The area is suburban, in stark contrast to the densely populated City of San Francisco, and is sandwiched between The City and Silicon Valley.
Residents enjoy a wide variety of local environments from the Pacific Ocean towns of Pacifica and Half Moon Bay to the bayside communities of San Mateo, Foster City, Redwood City, to the mountainous areas in-between. The Santa Cruz Mountains, which run down the middle of the Peninsula are par of the Pacific Coastal Range. This area boasts an abundance of wilderness including the Crystal Springs Reservoir, Purisima Creek Redwoods, Monte Bello Open Space Preserve among others.
The coastal area offers a multitude of beaches and State Parks, while the bayside includes famed Coyote Point and marshland areas popular with kayakers and bird enthusiasts.
Despite being a bedroom community for both Silicon Valley and The City of San Francisco, The Peninsula has many top notch employers of it's own including Oracle, SalesForce.com and Franklin-Templeton. the Peninsula is also home to the San Francisco International Airport.
Originally home to the Ohlone American Indian Peoples, the area was colonized by the Spanish in the 1700's, came briefly under Mexican rule in the 1800's and eventually part of the United States after the Mexican-American War in 1848.
