About the East Bay Region
Cities along the Eastern shore of San Francisco Bay from Vallejo in the north to Fremont in the south comprise the East Bay Region of California. This area is fast growing with several business centers of its own, as well as providing residences for Silicon Valley and San Francisco workers.
Oakland is a major commercial center, home to the bustling Port of Oakland, Jack London Square and the Oakland International Airport. Oakland is also host to major league baseball (Oakland A's), football (Oakland Raiders), and basketball (Golden State Warriors) professional sports teams.
Vallejo was once the site of the Mare Island Naval Shipyard and Alameda Island the former site of the Alameda Naval Air Station. Both bases have since been decomissioned.
Institutions of higher education include University of California at Berkeley, and Cal State University in Hayward.
Earliest inhabitants of the area were known as the Ohlone Native American people. Conquistadors claimed these lands for the Spanish Crown in 1772, which eventually became part of Mexico after the Mexican Revolution. The United States acquired the East Bay by treaty following the Mexican-American War.
